Automobile Accidents Can Change Your Life

Auto accidents can happen in the blink of an eye, but can change the course of your life forever.  The sudden acceleration and deceleration of an automobile immediately after a collision can have a profound affect upon the occupant inside. Injuries, both internal and external, can be serious or even fatal.

Despite the increasing sophistication of modern automobiles, safety devices often do not fully protect vehicle occupants against substantial injuries. In fact, facial burns and lacerations can often occur when a vehicle’s airbag has deployed. If enough force is imparted upon a vehicle, the integrity of its frame and body work will be compromised, pinning or crushing the person inside the passenger compartment. If this occurs, injuries can be severe and life threatening.

Holding Negligent Drivers Responsible

An important part of a car accident lawyer’s job is to tell the story of how an accident happened so that a jury, judge, or adjuster will understand what the client went through. Any number of factors can contribute to the occurrence of an accident.  The best car accident attorneys focus on the details of how the accident occurred to determine whether the facts support payment of additional compensation.

Inattentive, careless or even intoxicated drivers don’t fully appreciate the risks involved in their behavior until it is too late. Similarly, reckless or intoxicated drivers who purposely throw caution and care to the wind expose the general public to grave and potentially lethal danger. Retaining a good attorney that specializes in car accident cases will hold negligent and reckless drivers to account when their actions results in injury or death.

What to Do if You have Been in A Car Accident

If you have been in an accident, it is important to gather and preserve as much information as you can. In order to pursue a claim, you will need to know the identity of the other driver, and their insurer. If you were unable to gather this information at the accident scene, our staff will assist you by obtaining a copy of the police report and, if necessary, speak to the responding officer. The most important contact you should retain for your records is the name of the officer, and the law enforcement agency they work for.

If possible, you should also take pictures of your vehicle, the other vehicles involved in the accident, and the accident scene, if it is safe to do so.  The names and contact information for any witnesses to the accident are also tremendously important.   While the officer may keep this information, they sometimes do not feel it is necessary to keep their field notes for extended periods of time. You should also take pictures of any bruises, or other visible injuries you may have, to document your injuries and the progress of your recovery.

Document Your Recovery

After your initial visit, ask for copies of your medical records. Discharge instructions are not the only records kept by your medical providers. If you are unable to collect these records, our office will collect them on your behalf.

Keep a daily journal to document your recovery. As time goes on, you may forget important details about your injuries and treatment. Your journal will help you keep track of this information. Note your pain level on a scale of 1-10 for any injuries you are recovering from. If you have activities that you are unable to engage in, include them in your journal. Also include any medical appointments you attend. If you have a head injury, keep track of any symptoms you experience including headaches, dizziness, light sensitivity, nausea, loss of balance, sleep disturbances, or memory or cognitive issues.
